Title:  The Secrets of Putting Success: By Dave Pelz

Putts account for nearly half of your shots. So why do so many golfers spend 80 percent to 85 percent of their practice pounding balls on the range? For nearly 25 ye a r s I've been researching the short game and writing about it in this magazine. In that time a few incontrovertible facts have emerged and still hold true about putting, and they still represent the simplest way to lower your scores. Primary among them is this: If your hands hang and swing directly under your shoulders you should produce a straight-back, straight-through path with your stroke. However, if your hands are outside your shoulders (that is, farther from your body), it will result in an inside-square-inside stroke. This research breakthrough created a fair amount of ongoing discussion in the teaching community, with several teachers saying that, strictly speaking, a straight-back straight-through stroke isn't attainable. But for most players who aren't experts straight back, straight through is still the simplest and most reliable method.
